The name of Charlesbury Crossing is broken down as follows:

Charles = the name 'Charlotte' is the female variant of the male name 'Charles'
-bury = means a fortified place associated with (whatever the prefix is.  In this case 'Charles')
Crossing = a place or structure (as on a street or over a river) where pedestrians or vehicles cross

Thus:
The canton is a "fortified place associated with someone named Charles (or Charlotte)"  that acts as a "crossroads to other areas" (i.e. the outlying counties of the canton).
